Grade 5 families,

This is an update regarding the recent changes to school week. We will NOT be transitioning to full online learning. Please watch for updates as the current circumstances within our province evolve. In the meantime, there are a few learning activities students should participate in for the next couple days.

Spelling

Our weekly Spelling quizzes are held on Thursday. With the expectation of returning to school on Thursday, we will still have the quiz for list 21, not list 22. That being said, I will post the spelling list on Google Classroom for students who may not have their lists with them.

Reading

During Love of Reading Week, Mrs. Biech launched the GCS Reading Challenge. Students were sent home with “Heart Charts” to track their reading progress in the weeks ahead. Students are strongly encouraged to spend extra time reading over the next few days so that they can fill up their chart!

If students have their copy of Number the Stars with them, they may continue their readings, summaries and reflections as usual. This reading can count toward the reading challenge from Mrs. Biech. For students who do not have their copy of Number the Stars with them, time will be allotted for students to catch up when we return to school.

Math

The scheduled Math Test for this Wednesday will be moved to next Wednesday, March 10th. Grace Christian School is hosting its very own Mathletics March Madness Competition! Mathletics is an award-winning interactive site that aims to improve math skills through fun activities linked to the Canadian curriculum. Students earn points by completing activities and answering questions in Live Mathletics competitions. When the contest closes on March 31, the highest scoring student in each grade will receive a prize!  Also, the class with the highest average points will win a class pizza party! I will be posting weekly updates about which class is in the lead. If students do not remember their login information, please contact me. The contest starts today, so you have been given an opportunity to get a great head start over the next 3 days.

Science

Students in Grades 5 & 6 are encouraged to continue working on their science fair projects and presentations.  Please note that the science fair will now take place on Thursday, March 11.  Further updates will be shared if anything changes in the days ahead, all of which will be based upon CPHO directives and recommendations.

Bible

We encourage all students to take the time to continue learning their assigned Bible verses.  In addition, if your child is looking for an interesting Bible story or devotional, please check out these links below:
