How lovely it was to be back in the classroom! As we move forward with our learning, please take note of the following reminders and upcoming events.
Homework
Students (those who are not in the ESL program) should be practicing their spelling words every night in preparation for the weekly spelling test. Although we do review exercises in class, evening practice is essential.
Students sometimes have math corrections and/or class work to finish at home. Corrections can be found on the Post It note stuck on the front cover of the math workbook. When this book comes home, the expectation is that the corrections or unfinished work will be completed. Please ensure to make this a priority.
Lunches
Although there is a microwave in the class, it is to be use for the sole purpose of quickly reheating already cooked food (30-45 seconds). Frozen dinners (such as Michelina’s), Kraft Dinner bowls, and any other foods that require several minutes to prepare will not be permitted. With 17 students in the class and a maximum of 20 minutes in which to eat, it is just not feasible. Thank you for your cooperation!
Cool Days & Warmer Clothing:
Please remember that as the cooler days of autumn arrive, students should come prepared with a light coat or sweater for outdoors. Students may also wish to have a sweater for class, as jackets are not permitted inside the classroom.
Elementary Cross-Country Event:
Students in grades 3-6 will be participating in an upcoming Cross Country Meet on Monday, October 7th. We welcome parents to join us in cheering on our students as they compete. Grades 3-4 will run the 1.5 km race while grades 5-6 will run 2 km. Students are asked to come prepared with running shoes, a GCS T-shirt, layers of clothing (in case it is cold), and sunscreen (in case it is hot!). Also, students should pack a healthy snack and water bottle. We will be leaving the school at 9 AM and travelling by bus to the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall. Some parent volunteers would be helpful as we will not all fit on the bus. We will return to school by noon.
Additional information will be sent home with your child next week in the form of a permission slip. Please return the form to your child’s homeroom teacher.
PD Day- No Classes
As important as it is for your children to be learning and growing academically, teachers also benefit from continued learning. On Friday, October 11th, students will not have classes as the teachers from GCS participate in a professional development day.
Wishing you all a restful weekend,
Mrs. Smylie
