Dear GCS Grade 6 Families,

Welcome back!

We’ve had a busy four days getting back into the routine of classes.

Students have been dutifully working on their challenging math pages this week.  Students were introduced to Circle Graphs, which have some challenging components when calculating!

“The Newsies” Musical Viewing

On Wednesday, March 29th, the students in Grades 3-6 will be travelling by bus to the Confederation Centre of the Arts to view a performance of the musical “The Newsies” presented by Colonel Gray High School. We will be leaving the school at 12:05 and returning by 2:45. There is a $10 cost to this special event. Please be on the lookout for a permission form coming home soon.

Mathletics World Math Month Competition

Get your math brains on, students! The elementary classes have entered an international competition through Mathletics, an award winning interactive site that aims to improve math skills through fun activities linked to the Canadian curriculum. Students earn points by completing activities and answering questions in Live Mathletics competitions. We are hoping the enthusiasm surrounding this competition grows and will help to increase our students’ math skills. And, who knows? We may even win a prize! 😊

The details:

Important Dates

  •       Competition Begins: March 6, 2023 (yes, we are late beginning)
  •       Competition Ends: March 31, 2023
  •       Winners Announced: April 5, 2023

Earning Points

Students can earn points through:

  • Skill Quests (Quests) (Formerly called Understanding, practice and fluency)
    • 1 correct answer = 10 points
    • 1 correct test answer = 20 points
  • Activities (Courses)
    • 10 points per correct answer within curriculum activities up to a maximum of 300 points per activity per week
    • 20 points per correct answer within a test (Are You Ready? or Topic Test) up to a maximum of 600 points per week
  • Live Mathletics
    • 1 point per correct answer
    • 2 points per correct answer on a bonus (starred) level

Prizes!

The top three schools with the highest average number of points per student will win prizes. However, Mrs. Bouter is also awarding a prize to the student from each grade who earns the most points throughout the competition! Also, the grade with the most points on average will earn a pizza party! Check the blog for a weekly update about which class is in the lead.

Students can do Mathletics activities at home as well as in class. As long as they are connected to the internet and not using an offline Mathletics app, the points that they earn will count toward the competition.

If students do not remember their login information, please contact the homeroom teacher.

Happy math-ing!
